Africa | A call to action
The time to act is now: A timeless letter to African leaders and all of us.
Here is a quote that should energize all of us to act, “The challenge for Africa is no less than the restoration of its intellectual freedom and a capacity to create — without which no sovereignty is conceivable. It is to… adapt science, technology, and research to our context…it is essential to remember that Africa has sufficient materials and human resources to build shared prosperity on an egalitarian basis and in respect of the dignity of each and everyone.”
OneQuantum Africa Weekly Meetings
On June 16th, we are glad to host Muvaki Nhlema | High School Student | Quantum Tech Enthusiast | QZimbabwe Team from St. Georges, Harare, Zimbabwe.

ANNOUNCEMENT: CHPC Student Cluster Competition 2021
The CHPC invites applications from suitably qualified candidates to enter the CHPC Student Cluster Competition. The CHPC Student Cluster Competition gives undergraduate students at South African universities exposure to the High-Performance Computing (HPC) Industry. The winning team will be entered into the ISC Student Cluster Competition hosted at the 2022 International Supercomputing Conference in Germany. To enter a team visit https://events.chpc.ac.za/event/95/ and complete the online application form by 23h59 on 21 July 2021.
This year we have decided to extend the invitation to suitably qualified undergraduate and postgraduate students from universities outside of South Africa. The purpose of this is to grow expertise and exposure to the HPC Industry across the continent. Ultimately in the near future, we would like to see more teams participating from Africa in international events and competitions. To enter a team visit https://events.chpc.ac.za/event/96/ and complete the online application form by 23h59 on 21 July 2021.
Should your institution be submitting multiple teams for the competition, you are strongly encouraged to host an internal selection process in the form of an interview or quiz. Teams will then indicate their ranking on the application form.
Successful teams will be contacted by 23 July 2021.
Please assist the CHPC in advertising this opportunity by forwarding this message to appropriate students.
Due to the restrictions still in place to combat the spread of COVID-19 the competition’s organizing committee, has decided to once again move this round of the competition online and spread it out over a period of 8 weeks.
The content and total work required to complete the Selection Round remains largely the same as it was in the week-long event that was run in previous years and will take a similar form to the online round last year. If you are currently on lockdown without access to the internet, a computer, or a computer lab you are encouraged to enter regardless.
You do not need to be available from the starting date of the Selection Round and may progress at your own pace. Once entered you may participate as and when your university makes resources available to you.
The Centre for High-Performance Computing (CHPC) is an initiative funded by the Department of Science and Innovation (DSI) and is managed by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
