Quantum Updates and Ideas
On OneQuantum Africa profile presentation this week we are pleased to have Conrad Haupt from South Africa. Conrad is a Masters student at the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa) completing his research into multidimensional high-performance data-compression. He completed his electrical and information engineering degree at the same university in 2017. As part of the WitsQ quantum team since mid-2019, he has helped run a quantum computing summer school at Wits, multiple workshops and talks to universities and corporates, and assisted in expanding the quantum computing community within South Africa and Africa. Current initiatives of his include developing two quantum computing courses for electrical engineers (honours and masters) and expanding access to quantum computing across Africa through Wits, with the help of IBM and the African Research Universities Alliance. Pandemic permitted, Conrad will continue his involvement in the quantum space by studying quantum engineering further in late 2021.
As usual after his talk you will have an opportunity to ask questions before we have our one-on-one networking sessions (also not to be missed Virtual Cocktail Party). Make sure you sign up NOW!!!!!.
Quantum News
We had a great event this past week with more than 10 attendees, a 15 min session on OneQuantum profile of the week sharing by Dr. S. Ncube (slide deck here), an insightful discussion on how to shape our chapter and 1 hour of one-on-one networking.
For those who missed Abdulmalek’s presentation here is the slide deck and a background of the presentation can be found here.
Our next event will be on October 21st at 1500hrs SAST and you can JOIN here.
One of our members got admitted for a PhD in South Africa and is looking for sponsorship. If you have any experience or you would want to assist with that please let us know and we'll link you up.
A PhD opportunity has arisen at the Structured Light lab at Wits with Andrew Forbes. Details here.
Enjoy this colloquium by Betony Adams of UKZN on Quantum effects in the brain. Her research investigates whether non-trivial quantum effects play any role in how the brain works.
Free quantum data - Our company Interference Advisors has a free quantum data portal. Check it out and if there is a chart or insight that you'd like to use in your presentations or research, please do so. If there is a chart that you'd like but don't see, please let us know and we will get it to you for free.
