A lot of attendees expressed interest in learning more about networking online during last week’s meeting and here are some ideas to get started.
Connecting online is now as big a part of our professional networking just like face-to-face meetings and conferences. Work from home makes it even more important to master virtual social skills. Social media can be a highly effective tool for diversifying and evolving one’s network. That said, it can be challenging to mine networks for value and reach out to people you don’t know. Too many people focus on trying to network with high profile people. It’s a better strategy to prioritize building relationships with your peers and with people who are earlier in their careers. This network will grow in seniority with you, and can connect you with opportunities down the line. Read on here.
As you build your social network online keep in mind that having a large number of social network connections may be less valuable than a smaller, more intimate circle. An enormous collection of friends or followers on a network, make you lose the benefits of intimacy, discoverability, and trust, all of which can work better with fewer connections.
One of our community members is looking for collaborators working on drug discovery. If you are interested or know someone who can help, please let us know.
